Getting Started for Authors
So you’re an author for your Group in GroupNews? Wonderful! Your Group members are sure to be looking forward to what you post when they log into GroupNews. Here are some pointers to help you get comfortable with the GroupNews writing tools.
There are currently three different types of posts in GroupNews that you can write: Story, Event, and Deadline. While each has its own features, the editors for each are similar, so you should feel comfortable making new content in any of them.
Start a new Post
If you can author for your group, you'll find a + button in the main toolbar throughout your GroupNews workspace. That opens up your content menu, where you can start a new post of any type. It's also here that you can see all your content—all the posts you've written.
Editors
The post editors all work similarly, so once you use one, the others should be familiar right away. They automatically save your work, and check for errors or missing content only when you're ready to publish.
Story Editor
The Story Editor is straightforward and has everything that you need to write your story. Choose which channel to publish your story, give it a title, add a featured image if you'd like, and write the contents of the story.
The story editor is laid out identically to the published story, so it acts as a preview of what your story will look like when it is published. What you see is truly what you get.
Event Editor
In addition to the channel, title, featured image, and body copy, from the story editor, the Event editor has features that are applicable to, well, events.
Of course, you can set a start and end date and time, select whether your event is in person or online, and fill in details about each option.
Deadline Editor
The Deadline editor is very similar to the event editor, but instead of a start and end date and time, you'll find only a deadline date.
Options Panel
Each post editor has an options panel which give you the same post-specific options. You can open the options panel by clicking the Options button in the editor toolbar. That will open a panel in your post editor that looks like this:
Excerpt
If you want to customize the block of text that summarizes your post in news feed cards, you can do so here. If you leave the excerpt blank, feed cards will simply display the first few lines of your post.
Additional Options
Here, you can configure your post by toggling options on or off. The options you have available are:
- Show Author: Whether or not to display your author byline on your post.
- Enable Discussion: Whether or not to allow discussions on this post. This defaults to on.
- Request Acknowledgement: Enabling this will notify everyone in your Group that they should read and acknowledge this post.
Attachments
If you want to share files with your posts, you can attach files to your post by dragging and dropping them here.
